About Us

We’re Mathieu and Elyssa, a French-American wine couple. We actually met while harvesting at La Grange de l’Oncle Charles in Alsace in 2017. Since then, we traveled our fair share and lived in Australia, the U.S. and are currently back to Alsace in the North-East of France.

Terre has a double meaning in French, land and earth which are both very important to us and this blog. We will talk at length about terroir wines, wines that express their soil and the place they come from. We’ll talk about vineyards that look for solutions to protect our planet Earth. But Terre will also be about travel to wine regions with vineyard and restaurant tips. For those that want to travel from home, they’ll get wine advice and recipes to pair with it.

Elyssa Brochard

My interest in wine began when I was in school at the University of Houston. After graduating with a degree in hotel, restaurant management, I went west to study at The Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. After a grueling 9 months of tasting wine everyday, I left with a certificate in wine and beverage studies. I have worked in many different areas of the wine industry including restaurants, wine shops, production and now writing. When I’m not drinking or talking about wine I am probably shopping at the cheese shop.

I grew up in the Southwest of France before studying viticulture and winemaking in Bordeaux, and then wine sales in Montpellier. Since 2013, I’ve been traveling around the world while working in every area of the wine industry, from growing grapes and making wine to selling it in tasting rooms, shops or restaurants. My first great wine memory comes from a Fleurie La Madone from Domaine Chamonard that I had in 2013. It was the first time I drank a wine that felt so pure and gave me emotions. This wine changed the way I understood wine and pushed me to search for wines made with little intervention in the winery.

In 2016, I took care of a 300+ natural wine list at Soif (https://www.soif.co), a restaurant in London. During that year, I learnt about so many wine regions that I didn’t know or had overlooked before. That  led me to my next project, a bicycle trip. In May 2017, I started from Strasbourg in Alsace with my life packed on a 20 years old Peugeot bicycle and plans to take over the world. Four days in, I stopped at La Grange de l’Oncle Charles for what was supposed to be 10 days. After meeting amazing people, 10 days became 5 months and a commitment to work the harvest. It turned out to be for the best as I made a barrel of my own wine and met the love of my life, Elyssa, with whom I later made the biggest commitment a couple can make (start a blog 😉).
